This image was made by Foundation Imaging for the DVD director's cut re-release many years later, it is a CGI reinterpretation of the scenes shot by Trumbull where the plasma weapon disappears before hitting the Enterprise. It may not be accurate in having this image represent the 1979 Douglas Trumbull footage.

Well, there was never a shot of both the Enterprise and the weapon in the same frame in the original 1979 cut. Both were always separate shots edited together, but never simultaneous. In the re-release DVD, for dramatic purposes both were placed together in the same shot. I'm assuming because having it wink out unceremoniously on the view screen in the original release was undramatic and looked a little hokey. I'll see if I can find some articles about the remade shots when the director's cut DVD was released.

Like I said, it's entirely possible that you're correct, it's just that we don't have proof one way or another. I'm not really worried about misrepresentation, since the whiplash/V'ger effect were similar anyhow, and if it's a different shot it doesn't really matter too much, but I would like to know one way or another... hey I guess when TrekCore puts up their HD screencaps we'll see, won't we. --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs ^(talk) 14:15, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

@David Fuchs: I've uploaded a screen grab from the 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc release that came out a few weeks ago. I couldn't get a frame accurate version to the image you initially uploaded, as it appears they re-did the VFX again. I'll leave it up to you if you'd like to revert to the prior image or not. @Locke Cole: I think it's fine, although looking back on it I'm not sure it should really be used at all versus a screenshot from the original version when discussing the effects, since it could potentially give the wrong impression at first glance.
